Is Granola Gluten Free? Everything NZ Buyers Need to Know

April 2026  ·  4 min read  ·  By Muesli & Co

It's one of the most common questions we get: is granola gluten free? The short answer is — it depends. The longer answer is more nuanced, and if you have coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity, you need to read it before buying.

Why Granola Isn't Automatically Gluten Free

Most granola is made with rolled oats as its primary ingredient. Oats themselves do not contain gluten — they contain a protein called avenin. However, the vast majority of commercially grown oats are processed in facilities that also handle wheat, barley, and rye, leading to cross-contamination.

This means standard rolled oats — and most granola — cannot be considered gluten free unless specifically certified as such.

Important for coeliac sufferers: Even trace amounts of gluten cross-contamination can cause an immune response and intestinal damage. Always look for a certified gluten-free label, not just an unverified claim on the front of the pack.

Granola Ingredients That May Contain Gluten

  • Standard rolled oats — cross-contamination risk (most common issue)
  • Wheat flakes or wheat bran — sometimes added as a filler
  • Barley malt extract — used as a sweetener in some granolas
  • Wheat germ — occasionally added for nutrition

Quick Reference: Granola Types & Gluten Risk

Granola Type Gluten Free? Notes
Standard oat granola No (risk) Cross-contamination from wheat processing
Certified GF oat granola Yes Look for certified GF oats specifically
Granola with wheat flakes No Contains gluten directly
Granola with barley malt No Barley is a gluten grain
Nut & seed only (no oats) Yes Naturally gluten free if no GF-risk ingredients
Artisan small-batch (no wheat) Maybe Depends on production facility & oat sourcing

What to Look for When Buying Granola in NZ

If you need genuinely gluten-free granola in New Zealand, here's your checklist:

  1. Look for certified gluten-free oats — grown and processed in dedicated facilities
  2. Check allergen statements — "may contain traces of wheat/gluten" is a warning sign
  3. Read the full ingredients list, not just the front-of-pack claim
  4. Look for Coeliac NZ approved products where possible
  5. When in doubt, contact the manufacturer — a reputable brand will be transparent
